17 enthusiastic GoodGym volunteers run for UNITED’s Warmer Together initiative
Good Gym is a community of runners that combines regular exercise with helping local communities. The Hammersmith & Fulham group is made up of runners that stop off on runs to do physical tasks for community organisations and to support isolated older people with social visits and one-off tasks they can’t do on their own.
Of the 19,000 residents aged over 65 in Hammersmith & Fulham, over half have a long-term health problem or disability. 25% live in poverty. 43% live alone. This task was to distribute hundreds of leaflets over two evenings. This spread the word about UNITED’s Warmer Together campaign to encourage older neighbours who can, to pay forward their Winter Fuel Allowance.
All monies raised provide extra support for less well-off older neighbours this winter.
Volunteers came equipped in the biting cold, running door-to-door, and Beth Nelson, GoodGym Hammersmith & Fulham Trainer, said
“We’ve loved running door-to-door in our community to help spread the word about UNITED’s Warmer Together Campaign. One of GoodGym’s aims is to improve the quality of life for older people, much like the aims of the charity!
By joining forces with UNITED we hope we can bring in some extra funding to help support older people in our community, whether it be a nutritious meal or social contact, to improve their quality of life.
Hopefully this is the start of a fantastic collaboration!”.
Thank you GoodGym runners!
