UNITED Launches Local Philanthropic Drive

UNITED in Hammersmith & Fulham has commenced a local philanthropic drive for its new campaign ‘Warmer Together. Moneys raised over the winter months will go towards to local community activities making the cold season more cheerful for in-need older people in the borough.

Of the 19,000 residents aged over 65 in Hammersmith and Fulham, over half have a long-term health problem or disability. 25% live in poverty. 43% live alone.

For many of the others, life is much more comfortable and enjoyable with support from friends and family.

Everyone aged 65 or over who receives a state pension automatically also receives a ‘Winter Fuel Allowance’ to contribute to the additional costs of heating during the winter.

The campaign reaches out to three groups to give a gift:

  • Older people, who can afford to do so, to donate all or some of the value of their Winter Fuel Allowance
  • Businesses, who can make a New Year or Christmas gift
  • Others, including younger people who wish to fundraise or donate as individuals

The Campaign commenced on 7th December with an online and postal drive to inform local residents about the initiative. A private launch will be held at Fulham Lunch Club on 19 December. Fulham Lunch Club, run by local organisation Fulham Good Neighbours, is the first recipient of a Warmer Together grant; this Christmas themed lunch is one of its many projects that helps alleviate social isolation and loneliness for older people in the borough. The event will be attended by Kevin McGrath OBE, Chair of United in Hammersmith & Fulham, and local councillors:

“This Christmas we are very lucky to be supported by UNITED in Hammersmith & Fulham which means that we can offer those attending a delicious festive lunch and Christmas entertainment. Their Warmer Together campaign will enable more older people to be supported and make new friends not just at Christmas but throughout the year.”

– Krzysztof Mikata-Pralat, Director, Fulham Good Neighbours

In addition to raising philanthropic funding, the campaign will focus on growing and increasing the involvement of older people’s organisations, including those that promote cross-generational support.
